It is important to monitor your child’s use of screens, keeping in mind the recommended maximum per day is 1 hour of screen time, this includes Television.
When we talk about apps and kids, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a child mindlessly staring at a screen for hours on end. No one wants that – especially not parents! But there are some really great apps out there that can help you bond with your child while also educating them.
We’ve compiled our 7 favourite apps for parents and kids – some of them are free, but we reckon those that cost a few dollars are still worth the price of admission!
Cost: FREE (first month)
This multi-award-winning app created by our very own ABC has already helped more than 10 million kids learn to read. It’s a self-paced app that motivates children through its fun rewards system – the more you learn, the more you win! Plus, with a 91% success rate, you can be confident it’s the right app to improve your child’s reading and vocabulary skills.
Allergies are an unfortunate fact of life for many of us, and for kids they can be really upsetting. This very simple app is a way to teach your child about common allergies like hay fever that are made worse by lots of pollen in the air. It will also help you decide when it’s a good idea to stay inside, and when it’s the right time to go out and play in the park.
This app may be a little too advanced for some, but if your child is interested in the human body (and especially what goes on underneath our skin!) then there really is no better choice. It’s a fun way to learn all about how our heart beats, why our stomach makes funny sounds sometimes, how our lungs breathe, our eyes see, our feet feel – and lots more!
Learning to read is one of the most important things for your child to master, so it’s good to know that this HOMER app is a researched-based reading program. It offers lessons that are customised to your child’s current reading level and needs, and they will learn through a range of fun ways: songs, stories, phonics lessons, drawings and much more.
This visual instruction app has been designed to support kids with disability and autism. We know that flash cards are fantastic tools to help children with special needs, and this app means you can keep them all in the one place: your phone. Create custom lessons to match your child’s needs, and purchase new exercises created by education experts.
Perfect for kids aged between 2 and 5, this app is bright and colourful to draw your child’s interest immediately. Lots of simple games will help them learn about colours, associate them with things like fruits and animals, and even teach them how to say colours in other languages.
Cost: FREE (to download); $6/month; $50/year
Yes, this is definitely the most expensive app on our list but think of it like an all-in-one tool. You really don’t need any other education apps because this one does everything: spelling, reading, writing, problem-solving, maths, science, nature and the creative arts. If you want a single app to prepare your little one for their education journey ahead, this is a great choice.
Technology has provided us with so many wonderful tools, especially to help our kids learn and grow. Make the most of your mobile phone or tablet by downloading some educational apps that you can share with your child.
