BIRTHDAY PARTY IDEAS FOR CHILDREN UNDER 5

March 1, 2023

Hosting a birthday party creates a memorable and fun day for your child and their friends. While parties in a play centre or park are great, consider creating a novel theme for your child’s next birthday to really impress. Appeal to their creativity with these imaginative activities and let them invite 5-15 friends for maximum party fun. Here are some exciting ideas your preschooler will love.

1. Cooking party

Create decorating stations for different varieties of food and let children assemble their own party snacks. Create a sandwich or sub stand, with varying kinds of deli meat, vegetables, cheese, and sauces. In lieu of a birthday cake, hand out mini cupcakes and watch them get creative with sprinkles, lots of coloured icing, and decorative writing pens. Let each child decorate their own cupcake and hours of fun will ensue.

2. Art party

Let children explore their creative sides by supplying an assortment of craft materials and paints. Setting up trestle tables in your backyard and providing things like:

  • Construction paper
  • Textas
  • Glue
  • Glitter
  • Scissors
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Stickers

If you don’t want to deal with a mess, put a tarp or drop sheet under the table for easy cleanup. Try not to have it inside (or be very careful), especially if glitter is involved!

3. Athletics carnival

Set up an obstacle course with items such as cones, hula hoops, and skipping ropes for children to navigate. Create child-friendly versions of athletics events, like hacky-sack shotput and a sack race. Make it athletics-themed by giving children goody bags with things like sweatbands and whistles to take home. Buy plastic medals or prizes to give to the winners so they can show off!

4. Bubble wrap dance party

Let your children dance the night away on a floor covered with bubble wrap! Put on some of their favourite songs through a speaker and let them pop the bubbles as they dance. It’s a great way to add another layer of novelty to a regular dance party.

5. Water party

In summer, host a backyard waterpark! Turn a tarp into a slip-n-slide if you don’t already have one. Fill up a bucket with water balloons, and another one with mini water shooters. Get children to come in their swimming costumes and everyone will have a blast.

6. Tea party

Send out formal invites asking invitees to dress nicely, and even bring a stuffed friend or doll to be their date. Hold the party on a picnic blanket or a mini table and supply finger foods like mini sandwiches and assorted cream biscuits. Create a pitcher of ‘iced tea’ with added fruits, and let the guests serve themselves and play away the afternoon.
